Why should I donate medicine when I can return them for credit?

Returning and donating are not exclusive options. You can donate medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, that are not eligible for return credit. Many organizations find that most of their medications, especially OTC products, are not creditable. Donations can provide potential tax deductions, offering more value than return credits.

Can I donate medicine from outside the United States?

Medication not labeled for use in the U.S. is not eligible for donation. We only accept donations that meet U.S. labeling standards to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.

What types of OTC medications are in high demand for donation?

Cold and flu medications, pain relievers, allergy meds, and vitamins are some of the most requested items from our community partners. We’ll provide guidance on what’s most needed.

Can I donate opened packages of OTC medications?

No, only unopened and sealed packages of OTC medications are eligible for donation.

Can I donate store-brand medications?

Yes! Store-brand OTC products are eligible for donation as long as they meet the requirements of being unopened, unexpired, and sealed.

Can I donate expired medications?

Expired medication is not eligible for donation. We ask individuals to ensure their medication is 5+ months away from expiration. For organizations donating either prescription or over-the-counter medicine, most donations need to be 6+ months from expiration.

Can I donate inhalers?

You can donate inhalers, as long as they are unopened or have an inner seal. Foil-wrapped inhalers are acceptable, even if the outer box is opened.

Can I donate self-injectable medication?

Yes, you can donate self-injectable medications such as epi-pens or other pre-filled syringes if they are unexpired, sealed/unopened, non-controlled, and non-refrigerated.

Can I donate IV medication?

No, IV medications are not eligible for donation.

Can I donate medical supplies such as PPE, dressings, or hygiene products?

No, medical supplies are not eligible for donation.

How often do we need to donate?

You can donate prescription and over-the-counter medicine as often as you’d like, and according to your facility’s needs! Some groups make a shipment every week, while others donate every 1-2 months or as part of their surplus management practices.

How do I donate medications from multiple store locations?

SIRUM can help coordinate donations from multiple locations by setting up a standardized process for each store, or working directly with the distribution center. We’ll provide you with the necessary materials and logistics support.

Yes. Donating medicine is legal. SIRUM works under each state’s Good Samaritan Laws for Drug Donation. We are the nation’s leading expert on drug donation laws and regulations.
